The resort has 36 holes and is located on the southwest coast of Maui. Both courses were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., the Makena North Course opened in 1993. Both courses are really hidden gems in Hawaii, you hear about all the top rated resorts but wasn't aware of this one until a friend recommended it. The South course closed for renovation in 2008, and it's anticipated to be completed in 2009. I played both before it closed and prefer the North Course more for the bounty of views throughout the 18 holes of the surrounding mountain views, of Haleakala Crater and over the Pacific. The courses are routed through hilly, rain forest type terrain and foliage, and along rock walls, natural gullies and stream beds. The North plays to 6914 yards, 138 slope from the back tees, and the layout takes you way out and up the side of the mountains. Great ocean views with views of Lanai and Molikini.

update on the Makena Resort from the local news, hope they re-open the second course, and hang on here, great resort and golf courses, but way overdone: The Makena Beach and Golf Resort on Maui will be sold at a foreclosure auction April 29. The 1,800-acre resort, purchased by Maui developer Everett Dowling and Morgan Stanley for $575 million in 2007, will be sold “as is.” The auction will be held in the lobby of the Wailuku court building on Maui, according to a notice of foreclosure sale published Wednesday. The sale includes the fee-simple interest in the 310-room hotel, two 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed golf courses — one of which is closed for restoration — golf clubhouse and pro shop, driving range, tennis courts, restaurants and bars, pools and Jacuzzis and other retail space. The resort, including the hotel and golf courses, is expected to remain open, with no changes for employees or guests.
