Mactown is just south of the Wisconsin sate line in Rockton, off I-39 at exit 3, then west through downtown to Rt 75 west. It's a muni in the Winnebago County Forest Preserve, and a classic that's been around forever. It's a short course at 5,770 yards from the tips, designed by Alex Welch in the 1930s. It's pure golf in a nice rural type setting, with tight tree lined fairways, small greens, some water, and little in the way of bunkering.. Good course for all levels of play, fair for beginners, and while it's not typical championship length for the lower handicappers, it will challenge your game.Macktown has some interesting history, as it was a notable course in the 50's and 60's as an LPGA Tour stop, and even was played by Jack Nicklaus, who's scorecard is posted in the clubhouse. It plays to a par of 71, with three par 5s and four par 3s. From the white tees, the farthest back you can go, it plays to a rating of 69.1/slope of 112. It's a lot of fun to play. The greens in and of themselves are fun to see, and about a half-dozen holes belong in the category of short, quirky, old-fashioned holes that are a blast to discover and play. Off the tee– no forced carries or big drives required to play safe, but the small green targets and steep green falloffs force the golfer to think about those approach shots, and requires creativity to get up and down. Rates are very low, conditions are predictably good, and pace of play's never all that bad since it's such a short course.

Played Macktwon early Sunday Morning and was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the course.Tee boxes were ia little worn but the fairwaysand greens were in very good shape. A few spots in the fairway were under repair but nothing that should be a concern. The staff was very friendly and allowed us to replay for free. Very well worth the $35.00 with cart.
