Lyon Oaks is Oakland County Park's golf crown jewel. Designed by Arthur Hills and built in 2002, the course was created to compete with the many high-end courses that sprouted up in Michigan in the late 1990's and early 2000's. The course features a large clubhouse and top notch practice area.

The tips play at 6,775 (72.7/137 rating) with 4 alternate tees that allow one to adjust the difficulty. The course was built on 230 acres of gently rolling woodland and once on the course one can imagine you are far from civilization.

Fairways are typically generous. If one does hit a wild shot, the bordering forest will eat your ball so keep it on the short grass. The challenge to scoring mainly lies in your approach shot to bunkered, mounded, large greens.

All rates include a cart but one may walk (at no discount). Ditch the cart as the walk is pretty and not too hilly.

From I-96, take either Milford Road exit (coming from the west) or Wixom Road exit (from the east). Go north to Pontiac Trail and then either east (right) from Milford Road or west (left) from Wixom Road.

Lyon Oaks is simply one of the best courses in the area. The layout has expansive fairways blended in nicely with enough trouble to keep golfers honest like wetlands and forests add to the overall experience. Lyon Oaks is in peak condition right now, the greens were firm and true, the bunkers were in great shape and there wasn't a bare spot or waterlogged area on the course. The fairways are generous and the greens are large and hold approach shots nicely. The pro shop attendants weren't particularly chatty, but the service was good and speedy. We passed a ranger about every three holes, and they do a terrific job of keeping up the pace of play. For a busy Sunday morning, we had little to no waiting. The course is designed so that only on a couple holes are you in eyesight of another hole. Eighteen holes with a cart costs $46 Monday-Thursday, and that's bumped up to $56 Friday-Sunday. Those prices are upscale, but justified. A large driving range provides target greens and bunkers. No chipping area. If any of our area courses fit the bill of an "Up North" course, it's Lyon Oaks Golf Club, part of the 1,024-acre Lyon Oaks Nature Park that has nearly 800 acres of preserved wetlands. The course plays in and around the trees and wetlands. There are no houses on the course, and only once or twice will you come across players on an adjacent hole.
