Lyman has two 18 holes courses, the original is a traditional Robert Trent Jones Sr course built in the 1960's through the middle of you guessed it, an orchard. The course has a good mix of more open holes as well as parkland style. The routing is over rolling hills, through wetlands and woodlands, and is walkable From the tips, the course can play to just over 7,000 yards, 73.3 course rating and 133 slope. Very straightforward course, the fairways are wide off the tee, but with major bunker formations and tricky and fast greens with a lot of water on the back side. The Player course was built in the 1990's, and is about 20% more expensive than the Jones. From the back tees it's only 6,700 yards, 72.7 course rating and 133 slope, and you're not permitted to walk. The Player course is more placement style course with hilly fairways, some blind shots and quirky holes, but nice views. The front side's a nice warm-up for the tougher back which has a lot more character to it. Both courses very well maintained, either one's good to play, the higher handicappers would enjoy the Jones course more. It's about 30 minutes south of Hartford off I-91, exit 15 in Middlefield.

I actually prefer the Player course at Lyman to the Jones course. Yes its more challenging, but it makes up for it in the scenery. (especially in the fall!!) There are many blind shots, but play through it once and youll know where your approach should be. Jones course is much to open to pose any kind of "interesting" shots, but nice course as well.

Lyman was in its usual excellent shape with fairways that stood the ball up just right and greens that were fast and true. Obviously, the lack of rain has affected the rough, but no big deal. You won't see many public courses as nice as this one. If you catch this course during a dry spell, the greens will be the fastest you'll ever play. Great scenery as well.
