Lockwood Folly is a parkland style of layout, routed through a residential community between Oak Island and Holden Beach on the Lockwood Folly River, the Intra-Coastal Waterway and is close to the Atlantic Ocean. It's about an hour east of North Myrtle Beach, and about 45 minutes west of Southport. From the tips, the course plays to 6,836 yards from the blue tees, 140 slope, and a 73.9 course rating. The layout was routed through an old hunting plantation, and a good portion of the Live Oaks, pines and Cypress trees remain in tact. It was a tight, and difficult course, especially from the back tees, If I play it again, I'll move up a set of tees, and leave the driver the the trunk of the car. It was designed by Willard Byrd, and has developed into a nice, challenging layout, while the par-3s (long and strong for the most part) could use a little more variety in length, the par-4s and par-5s are good holes with nice variety. The course was in good condition, and the over-seeded Bermuda greens were in excellent shape. The exterior of the clubhouse and pro shop could use a fresh coat of paint, just a bit tired. Overall the staff was great, pace of play was fine, and rates were fair.

This course offers a great mix of holes and the layout is one of the better ones we encountered during our trip to the south. Bunkers were well placed and the holes played very fair to all levels of golfer. Water in play on many holes and a great selection of traps and doglegs kept me on my toes the whole way around. The food in the clubhouse was quick and satisfactory. Nothing to write home about but this course really is about the golf rather than the facilities. And in that respect the course excelled. I assume the reason that there was no beverage cart was because only about 10-15 foursomes played the day we did.
