Spanish Bay is part of the Pebble Beach rota of courses, and was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Tom Watson, and Sandy Tatum in 1987. From the back tees the course rating is 74.2, Slope 142, and 6,821 yards. They attempted to build a links course here, but that's a stretch. It's my least favorite among Pebble and Spyglass, but is still a treat to play. There's some great golf holes here, and a couple of quirky one, with great views of the Pacific through the course, better than the others in the area, in fact you have ocean views from every hole. Playing conditions are excellent, and so is the guest service. The course has some blind shots, tricked up holes, you really need to play it a couple of times to get the feel for the strategy. I'd place it #3 to Pebble and Spyglass in the area, definitely worth playing.

Since Spanish Bay doesn’t have a driving range, I warmed up at Pebble’s range and then took the shuttle to Spanish Bay. Weather was cloudy at the start with wisps of fog through the trees, clearing to mostly sunny around the 12th hole. Took a cart, with a 90 degree cart rule. The course was almost empty – the only other players we saw were a twosome a few holes behind us, and playing leisurely it took 4 hours for the round. Talking with the starter, it sounded like demand was way off for Spanish Bay. The course was in good condition, and the greens were pretty fast and rolled very true.Overall, Spanish Bay was nice but just didn't feel that special and I don't know if I'd play it again. It seems kind of tricked up in places it doesn’t need to be, and just didn’t really feel like it had a good flow and didn’t feel very memorable. While I remember most of the holes at Spyglass and every one at Pebble, it seems like I can barely remember any at Spanish Bay – they just didn’t stand out. I struck the ball well on the front nine, but somewhat lost my swing on the back and ended up shooting a 90 from the gold tees.

Great conditioning, beautiful oceanfront holes, links style course through the sand dunes, not as spectacular as Pebble or Spyglass, but very enjoyable

Played in October, 2009, on a cool windy day. The ocean views are great and the course conditioning is superb. The course is relentlessly difficult. One casual swing will cost you big time. I personally think the green contours are too severe in a few cases. It is hard enough to land a 180 shot on a narrow ribbon of green only to face a 5 foot rise to a hole location the size of a pool table.

Link style course, but not in the purest sense, but pretty close. I enjoyed this cousre becuase you really needed to hit a lot of shots. You can play a 3 wood or hit driver. The greens were fair altough they had just been punched. I would like to have had a caddy or a GPS unit at this course because that would have helped a lot with yardage and hole layout. The real test of the course is the last few holes if the wind is up.
