Two golf courses here, off I-75 near Dade City and Zephyrhills, 30 minutes northeast of Tampa and 70 miles west of Orlando, and part of a 10 year old residential development. The North Course is the newer of the two courses and was designed by Kurt Sandness, and is routed through some elevation change and a little of everything in terms of Florida course design, ponds and wetlands on 13 holes, plenty of sand-80+ bunkers, and tree lined fairways. Interesting and challenging layout, fun to play. It's 7150 yards, 140 slope from the back tees with the front side more wide open and with more change in elevation than the back which has more tree lined holes. The North Course is a little longer, by 70 yards, but seems easier with a 137 slope, and was designed by Tom Lehman and Kurt Sandness, and is the original course. It's an interesting layout, mostly parkland style with doglegs, tree lined or pond lined fairways with some elevation change, and somewhat forgiving off the tee, but is heavily bunkered, and water on 12 holes. Both courses get a lot of play in the season, and lower rates can be had by playing off peak. Both are good solid layouts, usually in decent shape, but a little expensive.

After returning home last weekend from vaction, a friend invited me to golf the South Course at Lake Jovita on Sunday morning. Since I played this course a couple of months ago, I asked him why Lake Jovita and he said the area had recieved a lot of rain while I was gone and this course always drained really well. He was right. The course was in good condition despite the heavy rain showing why it is one of the premier courses in our area. After teeing off I noticed the fairways were in good shape and not soggy at all. The tee boxes and greens were well manicured, and even better, we didn’t have to observe “cart paths only.” Other than some standing water in the sand traps and bunkers there was little evidence of the heavy rain. The water was deep in places and I actually lost a ball in a bunker at the number 9 green. The friendly staff made up for it though. When I mentioned my lost ball at the Pro Shop before I left, they promised to have it waiting for me when I return. Visit BunkerTalk!
