Located in Gulf Shores on the Gulf of Mexico, the course was designed by Jerry Pate and opened in 1995, and extends to 7092 from the back tees with a slope of 134. The course is highly rated, but I think you can buy ratings with the national golf magazines. It's a good course, laid out among the sand dunes and pines of the Gulf Coast. It's a links style layout with a lot of deep bunkers of white sand throughout, and is located in a residential/resort real estate development. There's a lot of wildlife here including alligators and birds of all kinds. Make sure your sand game is working, there's sand everywhere, and the constant wind off the Gulf is always on.

If you played Kiva Dunes, Craft Farms, or Lost Key, conclude your day with a few rounds at the Flora-Bama Lounge on Perdido Key Drive. It gets its name from its location on the Florida-Alabama border. Former Oakland Raiders quarterback and serious partier in his day, Kenny Stabler, once called it “the best watering hole in the country.” A combination oyster bar, juke joint and seafood shack, the Flora-Bama is an authentic American roadhouse. We enjoyed playing Kiva several times over the Thanksgiving weekend. One great golf course, and for being the only golf course on the coast in Alabama, while you get the constant breezes, you never see the water. Kind of a links style layout around the sand dunes with wetlands throughout grabbing most of my errant shots. Mostly a flat layout with some mounding and the greens slightly raised, mostly wide open off the tee, save for a couple of forced carries over water. Really like the par-threes as well as a couple strong par 4's. The majority of the holes are routed around lakes, but with plenty of room, save the errant shot. Expensive to play though, but the service, conditions, and facilities are all top notch.

Kiva's one of the best courses in Alabama. It's demanding but very fair. My only problem was that the greens were bad, but the golf shop said they were just coming back from the rough winter, otherwise it was in great shape. It was by far the best course I played in Gulf Shores. Peninsula is very nice and fun to play. A lot easier than Kiva but just as nice--more relaxing. Kiva has held PGA Q-School 2nd Stage at least 2 times maybe more, its a great test. I played the The Grand years ago and it was very nice. Think they updated it so it should be great now.
