We traveled to the Lake Taupo region after playing Cape Kidnappers, about a two hour drive mostly to play this Jack Nicklaus designed course. It's a links style design, yet it's not on the water, but in a valley setting surrounded by farmland. The course was interesting, and unlike links golf, had a number of greens protected by bunkers in front, requiring an aerial attack, rather than the bump and run. The challenge to the course is once on the smallish greens, they're highly undulating. The front's a nice warm-up for the more visually attractive and challenging backside. Nice course and environment overall, part of a real estate development that has yet to take off. The course can be set up to play from 5300 yards to 7316 yards, we played it from the white tees at about 6,500 yards.

Played it over the weekend, and it was an amazing course. Great design with potted bunkers, undulating greens, water, high rough....a real challenge.

Definitely a course that you need to play at least a couple of times to get to "feel" your way around. Also, takes a pretty long time to play if walking with some big yards to carry between some greens and tees. However, that said, Kinloch has to be one the of the greatest courses I have ever played anywhere! Not many people know about it, but this is just an incredible hidden gem. Not a typical Nicklaus Signature course, as it has a more natural and rustic personality which lures the golfer into attempting imaginative shots which when they come off, you are rewarded significantly - hence why I loved it so much - risk reward is key here and the surrounding countryside - well - its breathtaking. Play it twice though!
