Located right next door to its more notable neighbor, Royal Birkdale, this is an unappreciated gem of a course, an hour or so north of Liverpool, England on the Irish Sea. Fom the white tees the course is 6,800 yards meandering through majestic sandhills and tranquil pinewoods. Many of the holes have elevated tees with fantastic views over the Irish Sea. There's more character to the course than Birkdale, and the price to play is about half. it's hard to believe it isn't more highly ranked. The front nine is mostly flat with the only hazards being a railway line on #'s 1 & 2, and a stream at the 3rd. The inbound nine though is routed through large sandhills to green sites nestled into the dunes and sometimes crowned. The club was founded in 1911, and was designed by Fred. W Hawtree. To be able to play Hillside, Birkdale, Royal Lytham & St Annes, and Ainsdale by staying in one area is fantastic!

We played Hillside on a 36 hole day with Birkdale, right next door. The front nine is parkland style with tree lined fairways, the back side through the sandhills and dunes, really overshadowed the front side, quite enjoyable round, plenty of great golf in the area, hard to choose with Birkdale, Southport & Ainsdale, Formby, and West Lancashire close by
