Supposedly the oldest golf course on Cape Cod, a 9 holer, and quite unique. It was built in 1892 and the design has been modified over the years, but it remains a true treasure if only for the stunning setting, rather than the quality of the golf. It's located on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic with the Cape Cod Lighthouse on it's grounds, having been moved more inland due to erosion. It smacks of a Scottish links course with constant wind, deep rough and gorse like plants, fairways which are open and run according to the rain, or lack thereof since there's no sprinkler system. Great views throughout, and a couple of challenging holes. The last is a short par three across a ravine over the ocean to a postage stamp of a green...fantastic experience.

The Highlands Links course in Truro on Cape Cod is a real links course--9 holes and all the scruffy rough you could imagine, blind shots etc etc---great fun

I have to say, having visited the place this week, that it was somewhat underwhelming. I would count it as a links and it is maintained as low-key as any Scottish course I've seen ... the fairways are so narrow I think I could hurdle them in places. The property is quite hilly and there are a lot of back-and-forth holes, which kind of get old until you get closer to the edge of the bluffs.

From the tee box at the 6th, at the bottom of the cliff to my right you can see the surf crashing on the beach, to the left, the lighthouse, the green is nowhere to be seen, the wind is howling, such is a round of golf at Highland Links. Every hole is different and challenging, as are the views throughout the course. Elevated greens and tees, blind shots, small devilish putting surfaces, woods, hills, it was quite a challenge, and a fun experience, just be prepared to shoot well over your usual score.

Farm Neck on Martha's Vineyard is a better course, but playing at Highland is a real trip, just a throwback course, not much in the way of facilities, reasonably priced, and great fun.
