Just north of downtown Portland, two very good courses here. The Great Blue Course is the tougher of the two, a 6,902 yard layout with a more open, links type layout with a lot of mounding around the greens and in the fairways. The Greenback course is 6,615 yards from the tips, and is a little easier on your game with elevated, greens, well guarded by bunkers, and is somewhat forgiving overall. It's a more parkland style course with tree lined fairways, six ponds and 86 bunkers. The greens are open in the front, large, somewhat undulating, and average speed. The course was in very good condition, pace of play was an issue when we played, but still just over 4 1/2 hours.

Heron Lakes is built in some wetlands just north of Portland on a huge property that has another 18 hole golf course, The Greenback, and is full of wildlife, especially in the late afternoons. It's a very scenic golf course with views of Mt Hood on a clear day. The best thing about the golf course is how fine of a shape they keep it in, especially the greens. I would recommend this course to all golfers, but especially to lower handicaps. The course is very tough, especially the back nine. For higher handicappers looking for an easier go-around, play The Greenback. It is maintained just as well, and you have the same beautiful views.

Heron Lakes is a good alternative to Pumpkin Ridge or the Reserve Vineyards for upscale golf in Portland. The courses are challenging, I prefer Great Blue, just a tougher and more demanding layout, especially the greens, but both are excellent, and reasonably priced
