Hanging Rock is on the north side of Roanoke in Salem, exit 40 at I-81 then north. The layout is mostly tree-lined and hilly with a few homes lining some of the holes, but otherwise, pretty much through the forest. There are four sets of tees from 6,800 yards down to 4,500 yards. The course was designed by Russell Breeden in the early 1990's, and from the tips plays to a 72.3 course rating and a 125 slope. There's five par 5's which helps in the potential birdie department, but the sloping and undulating greens make two putting difficult. There's a very unique hole here, probably the signature hole, the 5th where there's two greens where you have a choice on which one to play to, since there’s a hole cut on each green. You can play it to a larger green – but it’s uphill and will probably play longer, or choose to shoot over water to a pretty small target green. The course is walkable if you're in great shape, reasonably priced for the quality, the best golf course layout and conditions in the Roanoke area.
