Gullane Golf Club, established in 1882, has three championship quality links courses with beautiful views across the Firth of Forth to Edinburgh, Kingdom of Fife. The three courses do not have names but simply numbers, which reflect their age with No. 1 opened in 1882, but records exist of golf being played here for more than 300 years. A lot of people suggest #1 is the best course, but all three are very good, with favor going to No. 1 and No. 2, as they've both hosted Open Qualifiers. Any of them is a stern and demanding test of golf. The wind is usually blowing off the Firth, and the all of the courses are exposed. When you drive up to the course, Gullane Hill is the massive rise that you will climb beginning on the second hole. You finally arrive at the top at #7 for fantastic views all the way to St Andrews, down the coast to Muirfield, Bass Rock, and Berwick Law, and North Berwick. It's an extraordinary setting you don't want to leave. Not sure it's worth the extra cost, which I believe is excessive, just for the view on No. 1. No. 2 may be a better course, though, and not as expensive. The courses always are well condition with running links land, and fast paced greens. No 3 is a fine track, short, but an ego booster. No.2 is the only one of the three where the architect is known-Willie Park Jr. Gullane is about 30 minutes from the Edinburgh, Scotland airport and on the east side of town. Yardages for the courses are No.1-6,466, No.2-6,244, and No.3, 5252. Gullane is golfing heaven, we will return on our next visit.

The #1 Course is certainly better than the #2 course (I didn’t play #3), offering a bit more challenge and a few more memorable holes than the latter. The turf conditions on both courses were very similar to those at Muirfield, the venerable championship layout on the opposite side of the village; however the courses at Gullane lack the subtle contours that make Muirfield one of the elite tests among the British links. Rather, Gullane is defined by large scale undulations, with holes running steeply (and rather awkwardly at times) up and down a sizable hill. What Gullane does offer, aside from a decent test of golf on fast and firm turf, is a panoramic view of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth along with 3 courses that offer a large variety of overall length and challenge plus a children’s’ course to ensure future generations of golf connoisseurs.Enjoyed North Berwick and Muirfield much more, but it comes a close third.

The first hole is a piece of cake, but I couldn't believe we were actually there living it. My buddies said I threw a tee in the ground and hit it before they could even set down their golf bags. Then when we got to #2 and #3...I started saying WOOWWWW!

Play No 1 for the excellent routing up and down Gullane Hill and the stunning shot values, especially the 7th tee where you have views of the Forth Railway Bridge, Berwick Law, Bass Rock and Edinburgh. No.s 2 & 3 are a bit in terms of layout quality and strength. If you're looking for a 36 hole day in the area, head over to North Berwick, about 20 minutes east. Even though Muirfield's right next door, there's not much of a chance to get on there, you have to make bookings a year in advance.

A wonderful and great golf course to play. On the 7th tee, you feel like you are on top of the world. One of the best views anywhere in golf. You can literally see for miles in all directions. You feel like your tee shot will travel 400 yards.
