Great Southern is along Beach Rd on the east side of Gulfport, from I-10 it's the Lorraine Road exit, then south to the coast. Classic old golf course from the 1920's, one of the first in Mississippi. It was originally designed by Donald Ross, and Brian Curley has had a hand in restoring it to its original Ross design. From the tips it's only 6,200 yards, par 71 with a 70.4 course rating and a 124 slope, but it's a tough course to shoot your regular score on. Parkland style with tree lined fairways, small, raised greens which require a solid short game and able to get up and down when missing the approach shots. Considering what the course has been through with Katrina, it is in good shape. Greens are usually the best part of the course, fairways can be a little thin, it's walkable, flat with not much distance between the greens and tees. A great course with a colorful history & stunning views of the MS Gulf Coast's white sand beaches and coastline.
