Glen Abbey Golf Club is located just west of Toronto in Oakville is one of Jack Nicklaus's earliest designs, and has become one of Canada's top daily fee courses, and has hosted 23 Canadian Opens. The course opened in 1976, and plays to 7,112 yards, Slope 140 from the Black tees. It's somewhat forgiving off the tee, but there are woods bordering a number of holes, and water on 6 or so holes. The greens are slick, and with heavy undulations. The maintenance and customer service are tops, and well they should be. A course to splurge on if you fancy playing tour stop courses, but there are other fine courses in the Toronto for well half the price.

Not only is it a great desgin by Jack Nicklaus and my favourite course to play, but I have had the privilege of watching the some of best in the world play there during the Canadian Open. It's also been the home of some incredible shot making like Woods' 218 yeard six iron from a fairway bunker to the 18th green to win in 2000. But my favorite (because I was right there) was watching Ben Crenshaw hole out from a green side bunker (16th) so deep he could barely see the top of the flag to close in on the lead.

Always a treat and a real challenge. The day was warm, the course was in great shape and my game was, well, so- so.

Next year's RBC Canadian Open will be at the west-end Toronto course drawn up by Canadian golf design hero Stanley Thompson. It could be tricky in terms of patrons and player amenities - they'll have to close part of Islington Avenue to all but local traffic and players will have to take a shuttle to a temporary driving range - but it's a classic old course.

Playing the Open there this week, looking forward to getting out next weekend to have my shot at it again, conditions look fantastic, save for the wet conditions.

Wide open fairways, big greens and four tee boxes to choose from depending upon your ability. This course will challenge the best of golfers from the appropriate tee box. For maximum enjoyment, do not move back further than your ability. Although the course is generally in immaculate condition and rivals some of the best courses in North America, at $225 per round, there is definitely better value to be had at numerous greater Toronto and Hamilton area courses. This course is heavily booked for corporate events.Make sure you drop a ball in the sand trap on 18 and try to copy Tiger's seven iron shot. No doubt you'll make a donation to the lake.
