The course is located on the east side of St Louis on the Illinois side just north of East St. Louis. Ten minutes from downtown St. Louis this Keith Foster design is a true links layout and features the St. Louis areas only public bentgrass fairways. Always in great shape! From the rear tees is 7,178 yards, a course rating of 75, and a 138 slope. The course plays tough but is fair if you stay in the fairway with scenic views of downtown St. Louis and the Arch. Course is well maintained except when there's been a lot of rain, doesn't seem to drain well being so close to the river and the surrounding wetlands. Can be expensive if you're not part of the Walter's e-club or a senior, or playing twilight. The course is routed through an open meadow type ground, with the fairways bordered by mounding and tall native grasses with lakes and wetlands along the holes.

Gateway advertises itself as the only bentgrass course in the area. And the bentgrass is very nice, even after a tough summer. They have several lakes on the property that they use for irrigation. I guess I haven't played all that many all-bentgrass courses, but I am pretty sure I have never played one that is so firm and fast, even though it is healthy and green from all the irrigation. Whatever they are doing here, they are doing it right. Definitely some of the firmest, smoothest, and fastest greens I have played in awhile
