Franconia is on the south side of Springfield off Dwight Road, tucked in between a couple of residential communities. The layout is an old classic from the 1920's that's been updated. It was originally designed by Van Kleek and Stiles, but redesigned by Dick Nugent in 2001. There's a couple lakes and a stream affecting play on a few holes, but mostly it's a typical New England parkland style of layout with tree lined fairways, small quick greens where accuracy is more rewarded than distance. From the tips it's only 6,300 yards, par 70 with a 115 slope, but tough to shoot your usual scores here. The course is always in great shape, mostly wide open, which makes it forgiving, and quick to play, usually under four hours. Reasonably priced especially if you walk.
