Farmstead Golf Links is up in Calabash off McLamb Road, north of US17, just across the state line. The course can play all the way back at 7,242 yards, but we played from the blues, which was 6,556 yards, 71.28/128 ratings. It was designed by Willard Byrd and Dave Johnson, and has a nice blend of open links-style holes along with holes lined with trees. It's fairly flat, has a lot of water and wetlands in play, and a moderate amount of sand, both in the landing areas, and greenside. It's notable to have a par 6, the 18th, 600+ yards, an interesting way to finish a round and a bet. Nice, out in the country feel without any development along the course, unusual for the Myrtle Beach area. Our only complaint was the pace of play, at over 5 hours.

Farmstead is a good steady golf course, lot of trouble off the fairway, and an unusual par 6, which was quite some hole. Not a home in sight, it was planned to be a residential community but nothing's happened so far, which was nice. The fairways are bordered by tall natural grasses, but don't really come into play, unless you're way off line. The greens were excellent, light in the way of undulations, held and rolled well. Overall the course was in good shape, seemed to drain well, as we played the day after a big storm. .On number 10 you tee up in NC and your shot ends up in SC. Yes you can honestly say I drove the ball from one state to the other. Then you get to do it again on number 14 from SC to NC.

A solid opening track - I suggest using it as a warm up round when only playing 18, as it's a 20 minute drive inland from North Myrtle Beach. Very open off the tee and greens are receptive and true. Can be a little penal if you miss badly as there are some dry washes and spider grass areas that will swallow up errant shots. Service was average; beverage cart was above average (friendly, well stocked and always around ever few holes), pro shop and food a touch below average (very slow).
