Mar Hall is just west of the Glasgow Airport in Bishopton , no more than a 10 minute drive. The course is part of the restoring of the Earl of Mar estate into a hotel/golf course development, but you don't need to stay at the hotel to play the golf course. We played the golf course on our last day of a golf trip on the west coast of Scotland, Troon, Prestwick, Turnberry, and it was a nice change of pace playing a parkland course after a week of links courses. The routing is over fairly level land on the Clyde Estuary, on the edge of the Firth of Cyde and eventually The Irish Sea. The course was designed by Dave Thomas and can play to up to 6,645 yards from the back tees, par 70. It was an enjoyable round, very straightforward layout, beautiful setting, the course fairways were lined with large stands of oaks and chestnuts, the greens were good sized, somewhat undulating, and overall the bunkering was moderate. There's two par 5s, four par threes and 12 par fours, and a practice range to warm up on prior to the round, which was somewhat unusual

I played the course yesterday, cold, but clear. The tees and greens had apparently been in place for around 4 years and had settled in really well but the fairways had been sown more recently and bad weather had delayed the opening of the course for play until this Spring. In places limited fairway growth led to difficult lies for second shots, so preferred lies were in place through the course. Even so, iron play from the new fairways (for me at least) was occasionally tricky. The fairways will improve significantly after further feeding and (I hope!) a more reasonable winter than we had last year. The design is outstanding, with some really good and interesting holes, particularly along the side of the river. Course drainage appeared to be very good too, so overall I thought that this new course would mature very well and in time become an excellent parkland course. Although the course and hotel are so close to the airport and motorway connections, the openness of the site and the tremendous views of the river and the hills beyond gave the course a real countryside feel. At 6259 yards par 70 off the yellow tees,it is not particularly long, but on the evidence of the game we had, it will set as stern test for most amateur golfers. The course is relatively flat and starts with a tricky 482 yard par 5, dog leg left, the back 9 starts with a deceptively short 130 yard par 3, nestling between mature trees. With adequate grow in and time, this will be one of the better parkland courses round Glasgow.

We played Earl of Mar on our first day in Scotland after a redeye from Boston. It was a good way to get our feet on the ground so to speak, beautiful setting for the course on the River Clyde, and just a few minutes from the airport hotel we were staying. The course was in decent shape for as new as it was, and was a good starter course for our golf trip in Scotland
