The Eagles is a 36 hole course with the Forest and the Lakes courses, and is located northwest of Tampa,30 minutes from the Tampa International Airport. The courses are routed through a large housing development and forested land with lakes and ponds, wetlands everywhere. The Forest course is 6700 yards from the blue tees, 134 slope, and was designed by Gary Koch, Rick Robbins, and Ron Garl. The course is tight off the tee, and on the approaches and has a replica of the 17th at TPC Sawgrass with the island green on #6. It's a parkland style course with wooded fairways, small greens, which are mostly open at the front, and is a shotmaker's course rather than rewarding distance, with water on 14 holes and 60 bunkers. Nice risk/reward type challenging holes, and an interesting design. The Lakes course is 7100 yards, 134 slope from the tips and true to its name has water in play on every hole. The course routing and design has more open landing areas off the tee, and much larger greens, but if you're off line, the water will come into play, sand is at a minimum on this side. Both courses get a lot of play, outings and tournaments, and so pace of play and conditions suffer at times. Overall, enjoyable golf at reasonable prices for the Tampa Bay area.

I recently returned with a buddy to the Eagles Golf Club of Tampa Bay to finish my review and play the club’s second course, the Lakes. I reviewed the Forest course back on May 23 and the course was in great shape. However after arriving we were disappointed when staff in the pro shop suggested we play the Forest course as it was in better condition. Our disappointment deepened shortly after teeing off. The course was not in the same shape it was 2 months ago. Not all the fairways had been cut, some tee boxes were in rough shape and the sand traps had a lot of standing water in them. The greens however, were a bright spot and still in good shape. Our price for this round was just $25 on a Florida resident deal which mitigated our disappointment somewhat. Shortly after we finished our round, I spoke to a staff member who told me the Eagles is undergoing a management transition and they will be working to improve the conditions on both courses. Because of this, make sure you ask what the course conditions are before you book your tee time. Visit BunkerTalk!
