Probably the northernmost golf course in Scotland, the course is located 58 miles north of Lairg, which is a couple of hours north of Inverness. It's not worth a special trip to include this in a golf itinerary, but if you're in this area of Scotland, it's worth a half day, if only for the desolate isolation of the setting where someone thought a golf course should be built. It overlooks Balnakeil Bay and the surrounding area of North West Sutherland. The course is only 9 holes, but the second nine is played with a different teeing area and provides an alternative look at the holes. The course is in fair condition, given to the fact that mostly the sheep grazing on the land, are in effect the greenskeepers. It's a fun little course to play, and the setting one of sheer isolation. The course is part inland, part links with a number of holes made challenging by the water, especially the last hole. A fun side trip in North Sutherland.

Today I played Durness Golf Club. It's a nine hole course that is the northern most course on the UK mainland. The course sits in one of the most beautiful locations I've ever seen, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The water is near tropical blue against a backdrop of beach and giant dunes covered in native grasses. The holes are not long or particularly difficult, but with all links courses it's advisable not to stray far off the desired line of play. There is plenty of trouble for poor shots. There is not a lot of quirkiness. The approach to the first is one of the most severely uphill shots I've ever played. The sixth runs along a loch and is more reminiscent of something you'd see in Florida. Though it is not consistent with the rest of the holes, it is a very good risk/reward hole. Finally, the ninth is as spectacular a finish as you can imagine. Tees can be placed anywhere from 100 to 150 yards over a chasm of rocks and beach. The green sits on a plateau that reminds one of the first green at North Berwick. Personally, I think the hole blows 7 at Pebble away.

Durness is the most stunning golf course I've ever played. It's as far northwest you can go in Scotland, located in a town of 386 people, designed by nature and the townspeople, and costs 20 GBP to play! The setting is on sloping ground, not reall linksland, above the Atlantic and Balnakeil Bay, and surrounded by the mountains of the Highlands on the South side. The course is very interesting to play, a definite re-play because of some blind shots, and deceiving routings. It was in good condition, we played when there was absolutely no one on the course in the setting sun one evening. Long 4 hour drive from Inverness, but once here fantastic!

If you are taking a trip to the norternmost point of Scotland then you should play here just for the views. There's a par 4 that looks like the longest hole you've ever seen but it's deceptiveliy shorter but you'll have about 200 yards over water on your second shot. My friends really loved this course.
