Image of Dundonald Links Gailes

Located 40 miles south of Glasgow International airport, Dundonald was designed by Kyle Phillips of Kingsbarns fame and opened in 2003 and owned by the same company, The Lyle Anderson Company, which owns Loch Lomond. The course stretches to 7,100-yards from the back tees. It is located in Gailes, which adjoins Troon, Prestwick, Western and Glasgow Gailes golf courses. While not located on linksland, it's a links syle course in character, with some parkland touches, and views of the Firth of Clyde. The course was built on land used as a golf course before WWI, but nothing of the original course is incorporated into Dundonald, much like what was done at Kingsbarns. The course layout is rather flat, and slightly contoured with the humps and hollows of links golf, with strategically placed pot bunkers throughout the most common routes on the fairways, and around the greens. There's a few stands of trees as borders along a few of the holes, and views of the Isle of Arran plentiful. It's a pleasure to play...at least twice to gain the local knowledge.

Played Dundonald on another blisteringly hot day (well, 25 degrees, clear sun and no wind). At Dundonald, most of the holes are screened from others by the contours of the land, so it felt as though we had the course to ourselves.Even before we started playing, it was obvious that the course was in great condition. The back 9 was just as tricky as the front, with a string of excellent holes with hidden problems. We'd forgotten to buy a course guide, and would definitely recommend you pick one up. Overall, we thought that Dundonald was a really good course and I'd recommend it to anyone as a must play in an Ayrshire tour, where it stands well alongside many other superb links courses. I'd certainly want to play Dundonald again and hope that next time round the greens are as fast as they were at Prestwick.

At Dundonald, most of the holes are screened from others by the contours of the land, so it felt as though we had the course to ourselves. Indeed, we only met the 4 ball who'd started 10 minutes after us when we came off the 17th green (though they were still on the 12th tee at the time!) Even before we started playing, it was obvious that the course was in great condition. From there, Dundonald is a 6725 yard par 72, (with a standard scratch of 74). Another feature at Dundonald is the large undulating greens, which we found were slower than we'd expected. Indeed, our first few holes were pretty forgettable for that reason. The back 9 was just as tricky, with a string of excellent holes with hidden problems. Overall, we thought that Dundonald was a really good course and I'd recommend it to anyone as a must play in an Ayrshire tour, where it stands well alongside many other superb links courses. Worthy of playing if you're on the West coast for Tunberry, Prestwick, and Troon. Felt a bit man-made, and was a little unique to the other links courses we played, but had the traditional dunes. fescue and gorse, pot bunkers, with massive, undulating, and fast greens. Good collection of par 3's. Would definitely recommend as an addition to the other courses in the area.
