It's a long drive to Machrihanish from anywhere in Scotland, but it's always worth the beautiful drive to have the opportunity to play the original Machrihanish, now the new Machrihanish Dunes, and one of Scotland's hidden gems, Dunaverty. It's just 20 minutes south of Machrihanish in the village of Southend on the south coast of the Kintyre peninsula. It's a short and fun links style of layout of just under 5,000 yards, par of 66, with only one bunker on the entire golf course at the 7th hole. The course is an old one, like most in Scotland, having been founded in 1889, and was completely remodelled and extended before the Second World War. The Course is sited on ground around Dunaverty Rock, a long established site for fortification which once was rumored to have sheltered Robert the Bruce. The setting has great views over the coastline to Sanda Island to the south, Ailsa Craig and Ayrshire to the east and Northern Ireland to the south west. It wasn't the quality or significance of the two Machrihanish courses, but truly enjoyable and historic course nonetheless. Stayed at the Argyll Arms across the street from the course, very nice accommodations, a much quieter stay than in Campbeltown.

Delightful setting, we played here while in the area to play Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes. We stayed at the Westbank Guest house in Campbeltown, away from the downtown noise and bars. The golf course was very scenic, and mostly forgiving, not the tests of the other two. but a nice diversion and better scenery.

SiroldGolfer commented. I have played Dunaverty many years ago when playing Macrahanish ..Its just down the road...nice course I remember in particular one tee shot up over a blind hill Ta Belle Robertson grew up on a nearby farm and developed her early golf skills at Dunaverty before going on to win just about every honour available in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s including the Scottish Ladies’ and British Women’s Championships as well as representing Britain and Ireland in the Curtis Cup.Here is their website http://www.dunavertygolfclub.com/index.htm
