The course is located just across the bay from downtown Miami and Coconut Grove and was originally designed by Devlin/Von Hagge in 1972. It is constantly rated as one of the top public courses in the US, and was once the host course for the PGA Champions Tour. The course is laid out though mangrove thickets along Biscayne Bay with plenty of salt water lakes, bunkers, but fair landing areas. It's a city run course and is generally in good condition. From the tips, it's 7013 yards, with ratings of 143/73.6. Stay out of the weeds here, since you could encounter one of the many giant iguanas that roam the course.

Interesting 'tournament style' greens but overall a disappointment with too many doglegs, bizarre mounding and a shortage of ocean views. On many holes (1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11, 13, 15, 16) the fairway doglegged around a series of bunkers/trees. These holes look almost identical from the tee. In each case the hole doglegs much more than it appears, and in each case taking an aggressive line gets you in trouble. BORING! S. Miami is a bit of wasteland for public golf, but given the $180 green fee and the array of decent options in Ft. Lauderdale, I would try to find another course to play if back in the area. I would certainly play Ross' Biltmore in Coral Gables before I would play Crandon.

Crandon was a tough course, especially because I was having a lot of trouble off the tee. Also, I wasn't quite ready for the insane humidity and heat, coming from the Northeast. I ended up also playing at the Miami Beach Golf Club. Decent course, but a little overpriced IMHO. I also forget that with a lot of Florida golf, there aren't a lof of elevation changes, so there's a lot of water used to create difficulty which I'm not exactly crazy about.

Great course and conditions, good views across the Bay to Miami, challenging course, rates a little stiff this time of year, but convenient to the in-town area.
