Cheyenne Shadows is on the south side of Colorado Springs on Fort Carson, but is open to public play. It's a reasonably priced, military operated golf course in a beautiful setting at the base of Cheyenne Mountain, and is supposedly one of the better military courses in the country. The course has been around since the early 1970's, designed by Dick Phelps, and was not always open for public access. It has a good mix of interesting holes, come parkland style, others more wide open and links-style. From the tips the course plays to 6919 yards, 71.6/130, 6,600 from the White tees, 70.0/123, and at a 6,000 foot elevation plays much shorter. The fairways here are wide and easy to hit, not a lot of trees but the secondary rough can be thick and heavy. The course has some elevation change, and makes for some interesting and fun tee shots. Decent clubhouse, nice practice facility, and reasonable rates.
