Cheval Country Club is offering a member for a day program while the recession is on, and it's worth it to play this formerly private club. It's well north of Tampa, between I-75 and the 589 Toll Road, routed through an upscale residential community. Like many of the development courses in Florida, they dug out the land to build the community and the golf course, and were left with lakes and canals, and on this course, water's in play on 17 of the holes. It was designed by Steve Smyers and is plenty challenging at just over 7,000 yards from the tips, 74.8/140 ratings, and as short as 5,055 yards, 68.9/122, and has 5 par threes and 5 par fives. It's an interesting golf course with a good variety of holes, some elevation change, which is unusual for Florida, elevated greens, contoured and undulating, and a good amount of sand. Overall, very challenging, and in excellent condition, play this course before they go back private.

Playing Cheval Golf and Country Club always gives you the feeling you’re playing at a private club. This could be due to the exclusive gated community where it’s located, or the consistently excellent condition of the course. That being said, it is a little pricey. We played Sunday morning and the greens fee for me was $70, but a few of the other guys paid a lot less with a Paradise Golf Card. You can also find cheaper rates depending on time of day and day of the week. Cheval can play long depending on your tee selection which range from over 7000 yards to a little over 5000. Choosing the right tees will help you better enjoy your game as this course can be difficult. Each 9 has plenty of challenges with dog-legs and plenty of water and sand that can come into play. Also, when you think you might have a short easy hole with wider fairways, your accuracy will come into play - as a friend said “the green is the size of a postage stamp.” We teed off at 8:45 and finished by 12:30 which was a good pace of play for a foursome and a weekend morning. As usual the course was in great shape. The tees were nicely cut as were the fairways and greens which ran true. There also is an abundant amount of sand which was in good shape and nicely raked. The staff was helpful and friendly. They have a driving range and a good size putting green for you to warm up on and get loose. They don’t have a GPS system in the cart but they have sprinkler heads with yardage markers throughout the fairways to help you get an idea for club selection. Visit Bunker Talk.com

There is NO Club House. Drinks only available from Cart Girl and Pro Shop. Pro Shop a building with 'Discount' golf stuff. No food. I would not consider Cheval a 'Country Club'. A Golf Course yes-that's all! A 'Thinkers' course/layout. Trouble on 3 sides present the player with options and challenges. A real 'Risk-Reward' course. Greens in good shape with quirky and subtle breaks.

Excellentn golf course, top notch service and conditions, and clubhouse. We played on their member for a day deal, which simply means they haven't sold enough memberships, and have to open to outside play. The greens fees were a little steep, but everything about the layout and the experience made it worthwhile.
