Located in the middle of the Irish Sea, most always in the fog, is the Isle of Man, its own nation, not a part of the UK. Not a place you would plan a golf holiday, but if you find yourself here, Castletown Links is a must play, and is quite simply a hidden gem of a course. The course is a clifftop links, surrounded by water on three sides, and is a spectacular setting, especially the view from the 17th tee, high on the rocky cliffs with the sea to the right, the distant Castletown Golf Links Hotel marking the right edge of the green. It was originally designed by Old Tom Morris in 1892 with revisions by Phillip MacKenzie Ross in the late 1940's. The course's setting is stunning, you will have your camera out the entire round, as you're surrounded by water and cliffs on three sides. There's no dunes to shelter you from the wind, and it usually comes whipping across the Irish Sea in good measure. Great collection of holes, the greens are fast and true, gorse and heather lined fairways, deep and penal bunkers, but all well conditioned, and truly a great experience.
