Ten minutes from the K Club, and less than an hour from downtown Dublin, two 18 hole championship courses in a hotel/resort/country estate setting. The first course was designed by Mark O'Meara in 2002, and used pretty much what the existing terrain offered, and is routed over moderate hilly parkland along the river Rye, and can play as long as 7,000 yards. Overall, a wonderful and interesting layout, and always well conditioned. The Montgomerie course opened in 2003, and is laid out in a vast meadow without water and trees, and could be classified as an inland links course. Montgomerie created 140 bunkers as the course's main defence as well as the greens which are severely undulating with contours and hollows. The course can play to 7,300 yards, and was the host of the Irish Open in 2005. Both courses are kept in top condition, the service and atmosphere here impeccable, and a great 36 hole day on two entirely different courses.

Played the Monty course at Carlton House this week. It is described as an inland links but it is a parkland course with few trees, wispy rough and very deep bunkers. In no way is it a links because - for one reason - there is barely a green where you can run the ball onto the green. The greens were perfect - there have been a few courses I have played where the greens are perfect to putt i.e every single putt goes exactly where it is hit and it never deviates off that line bacause of an imperfection. The driving areas are pinched in with bunkers inside and outside of the holes - most turned one way or the other - making driving really pokey for average length hitters who were forced into the narrow spaces. The longer hitters meanwhile could smash it over everything.
