El Saler, located just 20 minutes south of Valencia, close to the Mediterranean, about 4 hours from either Madrid or Barcelona. It's routed along the Mediterranean through pine forests and sand dunes of the Albufera National Park. It's always on someone's top 100 courses of the world list, and usually is just behind Valderrama, or the newer PGA course, as the top course in Spain. but that seems overrated. It was a nice course and setting, but too many average holes, and conditions were less than perfect. From the tips the course plays to 6,355 yards, 73.8/131 ratings, and was designed by Javier Arana, and has been the venue of a number of Spanish Opens, and other professional events. Half of the holes are parkland through the pine trees, the others, links-style along the beach and through the sand dunes. It's mostly flat, but also some hilly fairways with large, fast, contoured greens and views of the Mediterranean. Like the links courses in the UK, there's gorse-like prickly bushes, and uniqickly, ice-plant around the greens, which is impossible to hit out of. It was a challenging course with blind shots, wind off the Med, quick greens, with most of the challenge on approach to the greens. Wouldn't be in my top 100 I've played, but surely worth seeking out in you're in the area.
