Most people head to Brooksville for World Woods, but the Brooksville CC is worth a look. It's on the east side of town, off Rt 480, routed through a residential community that's been around for years. It's fairly straightforward golf course until the back side, where there's some good holes routed through a former deep rock quarry, with some spectacular views. The course is very well maintained with nice, manicured fairways and well tended greens. The staff is friendly and professional and the course marshals ensure that no group is held up by another. There's four sets of tees from 5,300 to 6,800 yards, from the tips it's 71.5/128. The course was originally designed by Bill Mitchell in the 1970's, Bobby Weed redesigned the back side recently. Not the caliber of a high end daily fee course in terms of conditions or facilities, but a great value, fun to play, and well conditioned.

For years people have asked me if I’ve played Brooksville Country Club. The answer until now was no, although I had heard about the course and how it is a must-play. Fortunately, I recently found an opportunity to visit Brooksville, and people were right, it is a must-play. This is a reasonably priced, challenging course made unique by backside holes that wind along steep rock walls left by an abandoned limestone quarry. Choosing the right tee markers is important as this course can play a little longer due to the layout and terrain. The course has 5 sets of tees ranging over 6800 to 5300 yards. The front side was full of challenges including downhill and uphill tee shots. The fairways seem to be generous with not much trouble, but sometimes an otherwise good drive might send the ball behind or under the trees leaving you punching out or with an obstructed view of the green. On the backside, you run into the quarry on holes 12, 13, 14 and 17. Not only are these holes picturesque, they are also head-scratchers. Here the terrain changes to include steep drop-offs, rock hazards and tight fairways. Accurate shot-making is required, particularly on the 12th hole which has 2 fairways, one upper and one lower, letting you decide which is best for your game. Either way there’s trouble. I found the course to be in good condition. The tee boxes, greens and fairways were all cut and in nice shape as were the green-side bunkers. We booked a tee time for 9:04 on a Sunday and paid $28 plus tax which is a good rate for a weekend. After checking-in we went to the range which was in good shape but not real long, only 200 yards deep. There is also a putting green near the Pro Shop and first tee. An ice machine and cups are available to keep you hydrated. There is no GPS on the carts so I suggest you get a yardage book to help navigate the course. Even though we teed off at little after 9 on Sunday the pace of play was good. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm struck as we were getting ready to tee off on the 15th hole so we weren’t able to finish, but I was able to go back a few days later to play the last holes. The staff was friendly, especially Vicki in the Pro Shop who allowed me to get back out and finish my round. Overall I enjoyed the course and the challenges it provided and will definitely play it again. Although Brooksville is an hour from downtown Tampa, the course is worth the drive and there are good driving directions on their website. Visit BunkerTalk!
