Breckenridge Golf Club, located 1 1/2 hours west of Denver is a Jack Nicklaus designed course with three nines, the Bear and the Beave opened for play in 1985, the Elk in 2001. From the Nicklaus Tees on the Elk / Beaver it's 7145 yards with a course rating of 73.5, and a slope of 151. From the Nicklaus Tees on the Beaver/Bear rotation, the course plays 7,261 yards and has a course rating of 73.9 with a slope rating of 147. Sounds long, but remember, you're at 9300 feet, so the ball flies further. The course is routed through the mountains, valleys, heavy forests, streams, and lakes, in fact water comes into play on more than half of the holes. The Elk nine offers more elevation change than the Bear and Beaver nines, but all three nines are a treat to play. It's a classic mountain golf experience, the course is always in good shape, and won't remind you of your muni back home.

There are a lot of good golf holes that grab your attention right once you step onto the tee. I played the Elk (the newest nine) and the Beaver Nine. It consists of three nines that are the Bear, Beaver, and Elk. I was really impressed with this place, and so far am really overwhelmed with the munis we've played this week in Colorado Common Ground in Denver was excellent as well. .

Played the Elk and Beaver on Father's Day with my family. Teed off at 3:30 for the lower rate of $75 per player, it was just too pricey at regular rates of $110. No one in front of us all day, played in 4 hours, finishing in the beautiful evening sun. The layout is scenic from every hole, some maye have more in the background, like #7 on the Beaver with Mt Baldy in the background. Some elevation change on both nines, and those were our favorite holes where you had a good drop off the tee, tree lined fairwys, and more character to the holes. The other holes were routed through the marsh and wetland areas, were good, but not the aesthetics as the others. Thought the course overall was very fair off the tee, played from the blues at 6,500 yards, very challenging, some holes if you were off line, you were dead, others were more forgiving. Great collection of par 3s, various lengths and green contours. Service was excellent, both in the golf shop and on the course, where a player assistant came around a couple of times, even helped us hunt, and found one of our balls! Cart girl ws around three times, conditions, especially the greens were excellent.

We played using their late afternoon rates this week, and played the Elk/Beaver nines, very scenic except for the dead lodgepole pines along the fairway, but maybe that's part of the atmosphere. Very difficult course, no matter which tees you play from, in fairly good shape, had the course to ourselves.

Very good course. Another good course with lots of elevation is Raven at Three Peaks. One course that I thought is fun, but not necessarily good or challenging, and definitely not long is Copper Creek at Copper Mountain. Its the elevation that gets you there, as it is 9712 ft. at the clubhouse. I am sure that you get to 10,000 somewhere on the golf course.

Fabulous, scenic, reasonably priced, no better place to play, IMHO in the mountains of Colorado
