Black Mountain is southeast of Las Vegas is Henderson, off the I-515 at Horizon. There's three nine hole layouts here, two, Founders and Horizon by Bob Baldock, and Desert by Williams, Gill. It's a good middle of the road layout for Vegas, not upscale by any stretch, but solid golf at a reasonable rate without houses lining the course. Course management is challenged here with the pace of play generally poor, but maybe that's due to the lower rates, at any rate it seems it could be managed better. We have gotten lucky at the end of the day to play all 27 holes in about 4 hours, at the twilight rate of $65 though. The course itself is usually in good shape, and actually thing the Desert layout is as nice and challenging as many courses in town that charge two or three times the price.

This is a superior course in terms of conditioning and scenery. However, it is a little too difficult formy game, and the back tees we played at the insistence of my playing partners, all better golfers. When I'm playing golf on vacation, I'm looking for a challenge, but not a bloodbath. The fairways are pretty generous, but from 100 yards in this course is brutal. Miss a green on approach and you are in a low swale or a deep bunker. Once on the green you have to putt defensively to avoid a three-putt. Nicely conditioned though, and no one on the golf course so the pace of play was just at 4 hours
