Birkdale is a real estate development course off I-77 at Huntersville, west of the Interstate. The course was designed by Arnold Palmer, and in fact Palmer won the British Open at Royal Birkdale in 1962. The course is parkland style on somewhat rolling hills and tree lined fairways, with some more open holes. There's plenty of challenge here at 7,013 yard, par 72, 138 slope from the back tees. Some tight driving holes, doglegs, forced carries, but then there's a couple of potentially drivable par 4's if the conditions are right, and some good risk/reward chances to score. Nicely conditioned, gets a lot of play, but rates are right.

This is a great course. The practice range and putting green were in great condition. The course was as well. The tee boxes were well taken care of, the fairways green and fast. The greens were tricky and fast as well. It's a challenging course but rewards a well placed shot.
