Bear Mountain is just outside Vancouver about 40 miles on Vancouver Island near Victoria. It's a real estate development with rentals, or they have a Westin Hotel on the property. Beautiful setting overlooks Victoria, Washington State's Olympic Mountain Range, the Strait of Georgia and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It's not necessary to stay on the property to play golf here, but there might be a lower rate if you do. There's two Nicklaus golf course designs, the Mountain, and the newer Valley course. The Mountain can play as long as 7,200 yards, or a s short as 5,000 yards, we played from the Black tees at 6,383, 71/133 ratings. The course routing is in the high foothills of Mount Finlayson and is very challenging with the elevation change, elevated tees and greens, and has some great views out over the mountains, city and the ocean views. The Valley course is less penal, maybe more enjoyable for the average golf, and every hole was unique unto itself. There's trouble everywhere like on the Mountain, but more forgiving overall. Both courses were reasonably priced for the quality and conditions, and convenient when staying in Vancouver.

Played both courses at Bear Mountain this past weekend, while I didn't care for the Mountain course I really enjoyed the Valley course. It was a lot more playable and not as "extreme" as the Mountain course. The greens were a lot of fun.

Played the Valley course, thanks to the review on Forelinksters, it was tough enough, but at least easier than the Mountain course. What a great setting and clubhouse, service was excellent, conditions were pristine, the price was fair we though, and the golf course superb.

Pace of play was a real problem here, it took 5 1/2 hours to play, get out early. The golf course is visually stunning, and an extreme challenge. The front side is a mere warm-up for the tougher, more scenic, and higher elevation back side. 11 was a great, island par 3, no bail out, so many holes have great views, but there's blind shots, forced carries, hilly lies, elevated greens, very challenging, and not for the higher handicapper. I'd suggest the Valley course is a little easier on the game, with almost the same level of scenery.
