The course is due west of Portsmouth, England on a coastal cliff 100 feet above the English Channel. The spot overlooks Solent to the Needles on the Isle of Wight, along to Old Harry Rocks at Swanage. The course opened in 1897, the initial 9 holes were redesigned by Harry Colt in 1932 and the newer 18 holes designed by J. Hamilton Stutt in 1992. There are three 9's here, Needles, Stroller, and Becton. The Needles and Stroller are rather similar in design features and somewhat flattish, but Becton has excellent character, so for an 18 hole round be sure to include Becton. The course features probably the first island par three in Great Britain, maybe the only one, a 130 yarder. This is a very scenic location, a good solid course, and some interesting holes.
