Barton Creek Resort & Spa has 4-18 hole golf courses, one of the top golf complexes in the Southwest. It' located in the Hill Country west of and near Austin, Texas. Tom Fazio has two courses, the Foothills and Fazio Canyons. Coore and Crenshaw designed the Cliffside, and Arnold Palmer, the Lakeside. The Foothills course opened in 1986 and plays to 6956 yards, 74.0 handicap, and 138 slope from the back tees. The course is carved through limestone cliffs, hills rolling with significant elevation change. The course's small greens are guarded by grass and sand bunkers, along with water hazards on 8 holes, and the closing hole is spectacular. The Cliffside course is similar to the Foothills running through the same type of rolling land with a lot of trees, but little water, except a waterfall on 11. Medium to large greens well protected. Lakeside is 6663 yards, 119 slope is a bit more gentle. The greens are medium sized, fast and undulating, and water comes into play on 5 holes. The course runs over a hillside overlooking Lake Travis, and is an enjoyable, less punishing layout. The Canyons, the other Fazio layout is 7153 yards and 137 slope from the back tees, and typical Fazio tough. The course is routed through mature stands of trees with water on 7 holes, and 50 sand traps. Each hole is unique and isolated from the rest of the course. The greens are huge, fast and severely undulating. It's a fair, but long, and challenging course. The resort provides high level service, conditioning of the courses is top shelf, and of course you pay for it.

Played the Crenshaw Cliffside course last week while staying at Barton Creek. The course was in great shape, we played in just under 4.5 hours, greens were excellent. The course is fair off the tee, the greens were large and undulating, be prepared to spend a lot of strokes on them! Parkland style layout with rolling fairways, most of the greens are open in the front so the bump and run, but you'll also need the flop shot. Caddies are mandatory at the course, great way to play the course if you haven't been here before.
