Barnbougle Dunes

Edit this info

Barnbougle Dunes is one of the top courses in Australia, and continues to gain acknowledgement as one of the best links courses in the world. Located in Tasmania, an island just south of Australia, Barnbougle, designed by Tom Doak and Mike Clayton, plays to 6148 meters with a handicap rating of 75, and was officially opened in 2005. The course owner, Richard Sattler, is currently developing a second 18 holes which have been designed by U.S Golf Achitect duo Coore & Crenshaw of Sandhills and Kapalua fame. The course is routed over 200 acres of rolling sand dunes, and is one of the most physically and mentally demanding courses you will play. The fairways are carved through the dunes and with tall native grasses alongside, true links course, no trees, and gently rolling, sandy soiled beach land .There's plenty of natural, sand areas along with traditional, yet huge bunkers. The greens run fast, are moderately undulating, and are generally in excellent condition. The trip here a 70 km drive from Launceston takes you through some of the finest scenery you can imagine.

Rolling and tumbling dunes, marram grass and great ocean views, could easily be mistaken for Ballybunion on Ireland’s west coast – with wider fairways. It's not a difficult course, some of the fairways are amazingly wide – 80 or 90 yards, and no trees to speak of, my only complaint is that the course is too windy, but then again, that's links golf at it's best.
