Old Mac is the newest course at Bandon Dunes, we played it along with Pacific Dunes and Bandon Trails over the long Labor Day weekend, and absolutely loved the golf course, it was our favorite of the tree we played there. .The layout is a tribute to Charles Blair Macdonald, one of the early golf course architects in the US, and was designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina. Thankfully when we played the wind was basically dormant, so the course played a little more mellow and fair than usual. The first impression I had was the green complexes are absolutely huge, and the biggest problem is trying to determine how far out your were, even with the yardage markers and course guide, although the caddie was very helpful. The routing is fair off the tee with big wide fairways, bordered by dramatic bunkers, but only has a few holes with views of the Pacific, so if you gotta have views and the Pacific as a hazard, play Pacific or Bandon. The design is classic links, supposed to mimic Macdonald’s design of National Golf Links on Long Island, which was an attempt to be a tribute to the Old Course at St. Andrews. Never play the National Links, but have played St Andrews, and it's a lot more hyped than the Old in terms of the lines, bunkering, and grasses, but the same style of open layout. While the greens are huge, and the fairways wide, it lulls you into complacency, when in order to really score, you need well placed tee shots and approaches, so in my mind it's really target golf. We thought it was the easiest of the courses we played, but then again, it was without much in the way of wind. A must play for sure at Bandon.

The course from tee to green was incredible but the green configurations were over the top. I have never seen such large greens, a couple over 80 yards deep, with some much undulation in them. On some holes I was wondering "where is the windmill?" You could hit two good shots on a par four and easily walk away with a six, as I did on a few occasions. You could not tell where the greens started and the fairway ended as it was all the same grass cut to the same height. Some of the views were also spectacular as you played through, over, and around the dunes. We had a good view of the ocean from the 8th green and the 15th green but the rest of the course was inside of the main dune line along the shore.

Bandon Dunes, all I can say is WOW!!! Is it windy? Yes. Is seaside fescue the equivalent of the bent grass greens I play at home in the East? No. That is not the point. The point is to make an American golf resort that is the equivalent of the great Scottish and Irish courses where one can make a pilgrimage, never be bored and to take on challenges that one does not face at all on your home course. The game in these places is often played on the ground, out of the wind, with funny bounces, bad lies and impossible bunker shots. Within the next 5 years with maturity, Old MacDonald will be recognized as the best public access course in the US. The design is absolutely fantastic, beautiful and interesting. There is nothing that compares. This was my fifth time at Bandon Dunes and I can’t wait to go back even though the golf courses beat me up every time. I play to a 3 handicap and have only broken 80 once, on Bandon Trails. I don’t care. This is the best golf resort in the Solar System.

Old Mac sits in the linksland among the dunes and uses them to for green placements, course strategy and plenty of potential for trouble. On the 3rd hole our group sat staring blankly from the tee box until the caddy instructed us to turn around and hit our drives blindly over a 35' tall dune that looked more like a wall. The greens are huge, complex and varried with everything from a redan par 3 to a "road" hole complete with the pot bunker. We found it playable, though far from easy and it's a lot easier the second time around. You'll loose a few balls to hazards like gorse or water but at the same time, if you are out of position, even 20 yards from the green, par will be impossible. The course feels links-like with the fairways brown and open with bare areas off the fairways covered in red sandy clay. After playing all of the courses, this is the one I'd play again, beause it looks so much easier than it plays. It just begs you to try and beat it, but when we looked at our cards we knew we had been suckered, and wanted revenge
