Bald Head Island Golf Club is north of Myrtle Beach about 1 1/2 hours, and about 45 minutes south of Wilmington, and on an island accessible only by ferry or private boat. You need to be staying at one of the rental units here, or playing with a member to be able to play. Tough course, narrow fairways through heavily forested, flat coastal land with wind always a factor. It plays to 6800 yards, 137 slope from the back tees, and is all you want for a challenge, always in great shape, and reasonable greens fees. It's routed through the resort residential development, but the houses don't really come into play, or are a distraction. A number of tight tree lined fairways, and some more open, with a lot of water in play. It was designed by George Cobb, with recent renovation by Tim Cate and is well worth playing if you're staying at Bald Head.

Last weekend I played golf at the Bald Head Island Club in North Carolina. The course was in great shape with extremely fast and true rolling greens. While not the longest course, the winds coming off the ocean wreaked havoc all day adding challenge to the round. Water came into play on about 14 holes and large bunkers throughout the course made it vital to keep the ball straight. One thing to be wary of when playing the course is the gators. We saw several both in the water and laying on the banks, just waiting to eat wayward balls and golfers. I highly recommend Bald Head Island as a cool golf destination spot. Its about a 25 minute ferry ride to the island, and once you're there, the only mode of transportation is golf carts. They also have a great selection of beach houses for rentals. The Island is definitely a cool place to get away, hit the beach, and play golf.

The course renovation is completed, redesigned by Tim Cate, who recently designed the Cape Fear national course in SC. The widened ten fairways to get a better look at the water hazards from their tees and eliminate most of the blind tee shots over water. Greens were enlarged, and de-sloped if that's a word, more contoured now. Also opened up the course now with some nice views of the dunes and the ocean beyond. Lagoons come into play on 14 holes, and elevations change as much as 35 feet throughout the course, with some holes having huge dunes directly behind the greens, you'd think you were in Ireland at times. They also added a lot of natural and native sand areas, which gives the course a more natural feel. Overall, well done modifications, added a lot of challenge and aesthetics to it.

Playing Bald Head is an all day affair, after taking the ferry from the mainland, catching the shuttle to the golf course, and then back again, but it was well worth it. Beautiful golf course, every hole a Kodak moment. The course recently added new greens, and waste bunkers throughout, and it was in excellent condition. with the fairways lined by palms, oaks, water, waste bunkers, and sandy banks to water hazards. .It seemed mostly forgiving off the tee, but there's jumgle and sand nearby if you're off line too much. The greens were in great shape, held well and were true. It was an overall enjoyable day, a nice break from the courses on the mainland, especially the ferry ride over, a nice touch.
