The course is a muni, but a special one as it was designed by Donald Ross. It's unusual to have a Ross Course open to the public, or at least be as affordable as this one. Most of his courses like Seminole, Pinehurst #2, are well regarded ultra private or resort. Ross was from Scotland, specifically Royal Dornoch, and had several tenants for golf course design. Make each golf hole present a different problem. Arrange the course so that every stroke must be made with a full concentration and attention necessary to good golf. Build each hole in such a manner that it wastes none of the ground at one's disposal and takes advantage of every possibility. Buncombe meets all those tests. The course is somewhat hilly, tree lined, playing to small lightly bunkered and raised greens which are crowned with collection areas. The course plays to 6,680 yards with a slope of 122, and takes a good dose of course management to prevail.

Course condition was the best I've seen this year in spite of the fact of the recent weather. Track is fairly straight forward but long. Greens were medium speed to slightly fast. Traps were excellent which was more than I could say for my game.
