The A.C. Read golf course on the Pensacola Naval Air Station with 27 holes on Bayou Grande is finally open to the public, after years of trying to get the government to open up. The course has been around since the 1940's, designed by Bill Amick, and was updated and redesigned by Jerry Pate, there's also an 18 hole executive course for beginners and the higher handicappers. Beautiful setting, one of the better ones in Pensacola for a golf course, and its greens fees are quite reasonable for the area. It's a parkland style of layout with pine tree lined fairways over flat land, with 6 or 7 holes directly on the bayou. The course is well bunkered, the greens are on the larget side, a bit elevated, and there's some water in play. Most of the par 4's and 5's require you to shape your tee ball to have an ideal shot to the green, and it's not all that forgiving if you're off-line. Great course for the lower handicapper, but fair for all levels, we're fortunate to have the Navy open it up the public.

Rainy, overcast day which helped clear out the course --- tee'd off right before 5:00 and finished around 8:20, great greens fees for a course of this quality. Tee boxes and fairways are in excellent condition. The greens are perfect and extremely challenging. Can't wait to play again soon.
